Hatteras Island and Ocracoke are two must-see areas in the Outer Banks. Imagine driving south on State Highway NC-12 until you can’t go any further. This is an easy day trip that will bring you through the villages of Rodanthe, Salvo, Waves, Buxton, Avon, Frisco and Hatteras. At the end of Hatteras Island you can take a ferry to Ocracoke, a beautiful island containing a lighthouse, historic buildings and breathtaking wildlife.
What can you do in Hatteras? Start with water sports such as surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, kite boarding and body boarding. For the more adventurous, you can camp in Frisco or on Ocracoke Island. Be sure to bring your sunblock and bug spray, and get ready for one of the best camping trips you’ve ever enjoyed.
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is the perfect spot to learn about the history of shipwrecks along the Outer Banks. If you have an interest in history, shipwrecks, lifesaving or pirate ships, this museum should be one of your Hatteras stops. Admission is free to the public.
Imagine riding a horse along the beautiful beaches of OBX. You can do this on Hatteras Island for $120 per family. The horses at Equine Adventures are child friendly and helmets are provided. Don’t miss the opportunity to treat your family to horseback riding together on the beach!
The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is an especially good place to visit in the Fall as birds begin migrating across North Carolina. You will find there is less traffic as well, making the experience even more enjoyable. Go on a canoe tour, fish, walk on wildlife trails and enjoy the 13 miles of pristine barrier island beach.
On sunny days we rarely roam away from our local beach. But on those days when the water is freezing or the jellyfish have washed up we love to take a day trip through Hatteras, enjoying several stops along the way!

Just checking out your coastal site!
Princess Gail and I spent a very nice few days at the Sunset Inn on Sunset Beach this past summer. You’ll have to tell us where to go this coming summer!
If you have the money, a house in Corolla is THE most beautiful beach spot you can go to. With the maritime forest, light house you can climb, wild horses tours… it is so beautiful. Of course I am biased, with it being like my second home in the summer. It honestly is just so gorgeous there!
